Overview of the Industry:

Independent Film, n. a feature film that is produced independently of a studio and usually is made for less than 2 million dollars. Sometime referred to as an "Indie".

We are very glad you stopped by to learn more about investing in the motion picture and video industry. It is certainly one of the most exciting and durable industries for investment.  The industry employs tens of thousands of people ranging from actors, directors, musicians, technicians, accountants, lawyers, film processors, computer software developers, caters, stunt people, hairdressers, and on and on...

This is a good time to consider investing in film because the industry is experiencing one of its most sustained periods of growth.  And the Independent Film Industry which a few years ago was limited to festivals like Sundance, has become one of the fastest growing industries.  There are now over 300 festivals around the world dedicated to Independent Film making, and just about every city and state has a film commission office vying for film projects.

Investing in an Indie:

Investing in the Independent Film Industry is a little like betting on a horse race and a stock at the same time.  Once a film is finished and distributed to theatres, the race is on.  How well will a film do?  Was it released at the right time, or how much advertising and press did the film get?  What other films does it have to compete against? The answer is  most independents, or Indies as they are called, don't fare well at the theatres.  In fact some films go straight to cable and video, bypassing a theatrical release all together.

But once an Indie is off and running the clock is ticking.  Films stay in theatres only as long as receipts are strong. In fact theatre owners can keep a film running for as long as they like.  Perhaps you have seen at your favorite multiplex theatre a film that has been showing for a number of weeks as new releases come and go.

For most Indies, the majority of the money is made with cable broadcast and video rentals.  However the Internet now offers some very exciting opportunities for filmmakers by offering pay-per-download services  like HungryFlix, Amazon's UnBox, XBox Live Video and Apple's IPOD and ITune.  Never before have Indie filmmakers had so many outlets to market their films.

Why do some films make money and others not is a complicated question.  There is no guaranteed formula for success.  There are many factors that determine why a film does well or not, and CFF was created to give investors the kind of information needed to make a sensible investment.
